Rough construction started on October 28, 2004, and was completed the first week of  December.  This was the most exciting time of the project to date.  With siding and a roof to go, will it be done before Christmas or even the first snowfall of the year?  Click on the pics.
Phase 3: Rough Construction
October 28: The lumber truck arrives
He dropped off a load of 2x6s and plywood.
November 1: The first building occurs.
This is the opening for the 9x7 foot single garage door.
This is the beginning of the exit-door on the back of the old garage.
Nov 5: Three-quarters of wall is ready to stand.
You can see the exit door that will close off the back of the old garage.
These walls won't stand for a few more days.
Nov 8: Chuck works on the west wall.
This short section will have three windows and a door.
Lori and Chuck discuss the 16' opening.
Nov 9: Chuck poses for the camera.
The walls are nearly ready to stand.
Nov 12: Houston, we have walls.
Finally, it starts to look like a garage.
From the yard, it is big.
Remember, this wall is 45 feet long.
Another inside view.
It is as big as the city will allow.
A sunny view from the upstairs window.
Without the house in perspective, it seems kinda small.
Nov 16: The gable appears on the north wall.
The end is now garage shaped.
This wooden square is an opening for future AC.
The side door is covered with Tyvek wrap.
The rear door opening is also wrapped.
Nov 12: Wall ties hold the walls together.
There are small amounts of visible progress.
Now, an outline defines an inner celing.
Nine foot ceilings will help reduce claustophobia.
Nov 22: What's this?  Rafters?
It looks like a garage!
The hard part is being saved for last.
Inside view reveals something that looks like the inside of a garage.
The fire pit is the easiest way to dispose of debris since we no longer have a dumpster.
Lori works on connecting the two rooflines.
And entire day was spent figuring out how it would go together.
Chuck and Lori are almost done with this difficult part.
December 1 was a big day for progress.
Doors were installed...
The odd areas are closed in...
...and there is actual plywood on the rafters!
Lori reinforces the front garage roof edge that was cut up to make the wo garages connect.
The old opening is closed up in a mish-mash of materials.
A view through the soon-to-be-closed hole between garages.
An attic access allows us to get to the second floor of the old garage.
It replaces the spiral staircase.
