The new garage became the old garage and we made some improvements to it.  The steel pole that was supporting the attic was removed, some rotted supports replaced, and some outlets and lights were installed.  We also replaced the front garage door at this time.
Phase 6: Old Garage Upgrades
The pole circled in red is going to be removed.
This was the rotted beam removed where it met the house.
The pressure-treated beam is new.
Rotted wiring from leaks is visible where the beam meets the house.
Chuck made a nice wooden standoff for the beam.
The old beam was splitting and failing under the weight of the second floor.
The pole and the wood to replace it is visible in this in-process shot.
From one side, the supports are now holding up the second floor.
The pole is now gone!  The three beams are clearly visible.
Three beams now perform what that pole did.
Each one is held by a bracket and cross-nailed into a supporting board.
Ideally, these aren't even needed, but one can not be too careful.
A rusty spot on the floor is all that is left.
New 8-foot light fixtures finally finish it off.
The replace the 200W incandescent bulb that couldn't light up the floor.
